In the Ted Talk, Milk's arguments are rooted in the belief that VR has the power to connect us to others' experiences on an intimate level. Unlike traditional media, which places the viewer at a distance, VR allows the audience to feel "present" in the scenario, which, in turn, can lead to deeper emotional connections. However, the "Five Theses on Virtual Reality and Sociality" reminds us that the depth of empathy from VR is contingent upon the content, user predisposition, and context. It warns against the commodification of empathy and the risk of mistaking a brief emotional jolt for profound understanding. The mixed feelings towards VR's role in fostering empathy stem from its potential overhype, the variability of user experiences, a nuanced understanding of empathy, and concerns about commercializing the emotion. My question to the discussion would be “How can we ensure VR is used as a tool for meaningful empathy and not just fleeting emotional reactions”?
